The amount of data available on a typical irrigated farm today — from weather stations, soil sensors, flow meters and satellite services — is comparable to what research projects had access to a decade ago. The difference is that most of this data sits unused, or is only consulted after something has already gone wrong.
Using that data actively, for forward-looking decisions, is where the real gains are waiting.
From data-rich to decision-ready
Having data isn’t the same as using data. Across many farming operations, there’s a gap between the information available and the decisions being made. Weather station data might be collected, but not used to calculate evapotranspiration. Soil moisture sensors might be installed, but their readings aren’t consistently informing irrigation timing. Forecasts might be checked, but not integrated into the scheduling process.
Close those gaps and the gains are clear. When data is actively used to model crop water demand and guide scheduling decisions, the research is clear: water savings follow, and so do yield improvements.

You don’t need perfect data — you need useful data
One of the most common reasons irrigators don’t adopt data-driven scheduling is a belief that they’d need comprehensive, highly precise sensor networks to do it properly. The research says otherwise.
Studies comparing precise soil moisture measurement against model-based estimates found that near-optimal irrigation decisions can be made without highly precise measurements. What matters most is having some data and using it systematically. The jump from intuition-only to model-informed scheduling delivers the lion’s share of potential gains — even when that model isn’t working from perfect inputs.
You don’t need to invest heavily in new equipment to start capturing these gains. You need a system that can make good use of the data you already have.
The barrier has always been complexity, not evidence
The science of irrigation scheduling has been well established for decades. Studies documenting water savings and yield improvements from better scheduling have been published for nearly 50 years. The barrier to adoption has never been a lack of evidence — it’s been complexity.
Compounding that complexity has been the way the market has evolved: most solutions have assumed that better scheduling requires dedicated hardware upgrades or add-ons — proprietary sensors, bespoke controllers, or purpose-built infrastructure that doesn’t connect with what’s already on the farm. Most scheduling tools remain niche products targeted at a single crop or system, and they demand significant time and money to set up and maintain. For farmers managing multiple crops or blocks under time pressure, the bar is simply too high.
